Xi'an City Wall, built in 582 A.D. (the second year of the Sui Emperor's reign), was expanded and rebuilt during the Ming Hongwu period on the basis of the Imperial City of Chang’an in the Tang Dynasty. It has been repaired and reopened several times after the founding of the People's Republic of China before taking on its present appearance.
With a total length of 13.74 kilometers, Xi'an City Wall is the oldest, largest and best-preserved China city walls. It is also on the list of the first batch of key cultural relics protection units in China. The provincial and municipal governments of Xi’an, Shaanxi have carried out large-scale renovation of the ancient city walls of Xi'an included the gap in the city walls of Chaoyang Gate, Hanguang Gate, Yuxiang Gate, and the moat etc. Besides, they implemented the Xi'an City Wall railway station connection project, cleaned up the environment around Shuncheng Lane, and upgraded the South Gate comprehensively, so that this ancient building could rejuvenate after thousands of years and become a well-known tourist attraction which combines forests, roads, rivers, lanes and walls. In October 2018, Xi'an City Wall-Beilin Historical and Cultural Scenic Area was officially awarded the national 5A tourist scenic spot. In December, the State Ministry of Water Resources officially granted the "national water conservancy scenic area" title to Xi’an moat.
In recent years, as a symbol of Xi'an's history and culture, the Xi’an City Wall has become an important brand of Xi’an as a humanistic city, an ancient capital and a characteristic business card of Xi'an to the world through continuous improvement.
